The square and compasses
Two familiar instruments offer a starting point for reading Masonic symbolism.
From the builder’s bench
A square lets a builder test a right angle. Compasses let him set a distance and trace a circle. Before they became familiar as emblems, these tools answered practical questions of proportion, judgement and accuracy.
Reading a symbol
A visitor can approach the square as an invitation to consider fairness in dealing with others. The compasses offer a way to think about restraint and the limits we set for ourselves. In this sense, the symbols ask a question about conduct that remains useful outside a Lodge.
In everyday fellowship
A Brother who gives a younger member time to speak, or quietly helps someone in difficulty, puts a principle into practice. The October District circular returns to that same idea when it asks Lodges to support one another.
